River Teeth: A Journal of Nonfiction Narrative accepts creative nonfiction submissions to the journal September 1 through December 1 and January 1 through April 1.  Submissions to the Beautiful Things weekly online magazine are open during this same time period. We're grateful for the opportunity to read your best true stories, big and small.

The River Teeth Literary Nonfiction Book Prize is open for submissions August 1 through October 31 every year.

$3.00

River Teeth invites submissions of creative nonfiction, including narrative reportage, essays, and memoirs, as well as critical essays that explore the impact of nonfiction narrative on the lives of its writers, subjects, and readers. We do not have a page length or word count limit (or minimum). Please wait to submit another essay for consideration until a decision has been made on your first submission.

We take submissions through Submittable with a $3 processing fee. We will consider simultaneous submissions as long as writers follow the normal etiquette of such submissions by indicating so in a cover letter or the notes section of the submission, and notifying us immediately if the essay is picked up by another journal. We try to respond to submissions within three to six months, though we always work hard to return submissions as quickly as possible while giving each submission a fair read. River Teeth requests first North American serial rights.

River Teeth encourages underrepresented writers to submit work for consideration, including but not limited to: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled writers. We accept submissions Sept. 1 – Dec. 1 and Jan. 1 – April 1. Please visit us at www.riverteethjournal.com for more detailed information.

If published, the writer will receive $100, two complimentary issues of the journal, a one-year subscription, and the option to purchase  additional copies at a discounted contributor's rate.

Thank you for giving us the opportunity to read your work.

The River Teeth Book Prize is an annual contest for a book-length manuscript of literary nonfiction. All manuscripts are screened by the co-editors of River Teeth, and this year's final decision will be made by guest judge and author Ander Monson. The contest winner will receive $1,000 and publication by The University of New Mexico Press.

We encourage underrepresented voices to submit their work for consideration, including but not limited to: BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and disabled writers. With their submission fee, all U.S. entrants who supply a mailing address will receive a one-year subscription to River Teeth to begin in the spring.

Please read the guidelines carefully. Include a cover letter with contact information and a brief bio, but do not include a summary of your manuscript. The 2025 Book Prize Deadline is October 31st (submissions will close at midnight) and all entrants will be notified by April 2025.

Thank you for submitting to River Teeth!
